Dining

Three rooms, one kitchen

Everything is cooked in the ground-floor kitchen and carried up, apart from the bread, which comes from a bakery on ul. Mostowa.

Spichlerz Table

Ground floor · 46 covers

This is the old cart bay, floored in the same oak as the rooms, with one wall of bare brick and the steel put in under the first floor during the conversion. The tables follow the line of the columns, so four of them are very good and the rest are fine.

The kitchen cooks the region: zander and pike-perch out of the Wisła, duck with apple and marjoram, barley with wild mushrooms, sour rye soup through the winter and plum cake when the plums are in. A short vegetarian menu is written fresh each week, and the waiters know what is in everything.

Breakfast is served at the table. It takes a little longer than a buffet and wastes less.

The Hoist Bar

First floor · 30 seats

It is one floor up the brick stair: a long counter, a wall of bare brick, and the beam that gives the room its name running out towards the old loading door, now a window with a rail across it. Duck under the beam on the way to the far end, as everyone does once.

The list is short: Polish spirits, a dozen wines mostly from Hungary and Austria, four beers on tap from small breweries in Kuyavia, and coffee until closing. Cocktails are not on a menu, so tell the bartender what you usually drink and they will make something close.

Guests staying on the floors above can order from the bar to their room until 23:30.

The Piernik Room

Off the lobby · open to the street

A small room beside the entrance with six tables and a counter, named after the gingerbread Toruń has been baking since the fourteenth century. We buy ours from a workshop two streets away that still presses it in carved pear-wood moulds, and we stock a plain version, one with rose jam and one that is mostly pepper.

Coffee is ground to order, tea comes by the pot for anyone who asks, and a jug of Toruń water stands on the counter. The street door is open in summer, so this is the room where you will hear the old town going past.

Allergies and diets

A word in advance helps the chef.

The kitchen is small and cooks to order, so it can work around most things if it knows in advance. Coeliac, dairy, nuts, shellfish: write to [email protected] when you book a table and the chef will send back what they can do. Gluten-free bread has to be ordered the day before.

Children eat from the same menu in smaller portions. There are two high chairs.
